This small town garden was dominated by an 8' high bank and a 10' high fence at the rear. In order to minimise the effect created by the bank and to maximise the feeling of space within the garden, I designed it with a diagonal layout. This has the effect of making the garden look and feel wider and larger than it is, and it also grounded the garden visually at the lower level, so stopping the eye rushing to the high fence at the end.
The bank was terraced into three levels, held in place with new railway sleepers. Being an organic material, the wood is soft on the eye and blends with the abundant planting.
The steps lead up to a private deck at the top of the garden. On the lower level, a small deck is just the right size for a bistro table and chairs, while the lawn is just large enough to give somewhere for the kids to play.
