Small Town Garden in Yeovil, Somerset
This tiny garden was dominated by an 8' high bank and a 10' high mesh fence at the rear. In order to minimise the oppressive effect of the bank and to maximise the feeling of space within the garden, I designed it with a diagonal layout. This has the effect of making the garden look and feel wider and larger than it actually is, while also grounding the garden visually at the lower level, so stopping the eye rushing to the high fence at the rear.
I designed a terrace of three levels to replace the bank, held in place with new railway sleepers and with steps leading up to a private deck at the top of the garden. Being an organic material, the wood, while structural, is soft on the eye and blends well with the abundant planting. To coordinate with the interior of the house, the planting is in warm shades of reds and ochres.
On the lower level, a small deck is the perfect size for a bistro table and chairs, while the lawn is just large enough to give the kids somewhere to play.
