This is a long-running project to simplify a large rambling and overgrown garden so that it becomes manageable without losing its instrinsic character.
My design has simplified the garden while keeping its basic layout. Drystone walls are being rebuilt; in some places these are topped with turf to open up the views, and in others, where more intimate areas are required, they have been topped with newly planted native hedging.
Rusty iron pergolas made by local craftsman Arron Castle pick up the colour of the stone, while box and yew hedging have replaced overly deep borders to minimise maintenance and provide a little more structure.
And the reaction from the clients? ‘Already I enjoy being in the garden again, which I haven't for a long time.’
